What do you think of the new ad campaign by celebrities that aired on BET?
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Adam Gopnik discuss the new TV ad campaign from celebrities featuring people of color and gender equity.
“In this new ad, we’ve taken a look at what it’s like to be an African American, a woman, a person of color, or transgender in America, and we’ve seen that this is a story that resonates with the majority of the American people,” Maddow said.
“And so, it’s really important that the American public know what’s happening to them, because that will make them want to come out to support this cause.”
“We’ve seen an enormous increase in the number of transgendered people being murdered in this country, and this is the story that is resonating, and the way in which the transgenders are being targeted and the violence that’s happening is really troubling,” he said.
“The people who are doing this are doing it because they’re terrified of the future, because they feel like this is not safe anymore,” he added.
“This is their future.”
The ad features three of the celebrities in the ad, including actor George Clooney and singer Katy Perry.
“The fact that we can actually talk about that in front of the camera is really, really important, because it shows that transgenders are still being murdered at a rate that’s unprecedented in our country,” Gopney said.
The campaign, called “Black History Month,” also featured the voices of celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams, and Beyonce.
It’s the first time that the celebrities have participated in a TV ad.
“I was like, ‘Oh, wow, these celebrities really care about this, that’s amazing,'” Maddow told viewers.
“So I think this is really going to help.
It just goes to show that this country can actually reach out to the people who feel like they’re not seen.”
The celebrities are also featured in the new documentary “Black Beauty,” which is scheduled to air on BET’s BET Hip Hop Show on Tuesday, March 1 at 9 p.m. ET.
