Google Ads and the End of Digital Advertising
Google is now advertising its new online video service to advertisers with ads that appear to have been placed on a Discord server, a prominent Discord-based social gaming network.
In an email sent to advertisers on Monday, Google said it had removed its advertising from Discord, which it says has been used by players of the game “DOTA 2.”
It added that it had “identified a number of players who have made inappropriate use of Discord to communicate with each other.”
Google has been using the service for years to distribute its advertising in video ads and other online video, including for Google’s Google+ social network.
Discord was designed to allow users to communicate directly with each others, which was one of the major goals behind the service.
A Discord user, who goes by the name “TheVortex,” was among the first to post a screenshot of the advertisement in June, shortly after it was first announced, along with a message saying: “If you have an ad that you feel we should show on this channel, let me know.”
In the message, he said that he was a Discord user who had joined in April 2017 and had “no idea what this meant.”
On July 6, the user posted a new message saying he was now banned.
In the screenshot, the player says that the “Ads on this Channel are being removed.”
He goes on to say that the user had “liked” a number from the Discord server and that “I do not have access to the Ads on that channel.”
The user also says that his account has been banned and he has been told that his ad has been removed.
Google confirmed that it was the case in a statement to Business Insider.
Google says it is “reviewing” the account.
The developer of the ad, “Pokemonkey,” told Business Insider in an email that it has no involvement in advertising on Discord.
It has been in development since at least January 2017.
“We are not the creators of any of the ads, we are simply providing a platform to share content with our users,” he wrote.
“We will continue to work closely with advertisers to improve our advertising in Discord.”
